Privacy Policy
The short version: Rooted Family is built for families, not advertisers. We collect only what's needed to run the app, we never sell personal information, we never build advertising profiles of children, and a parent is always in control of a household's data — including deleting it. This full policy explains exactly what we collect, why, and how you can manage it.
This Privacy Policy explains how Rooted Family ("Rooted Family," "we," "us," operated by J Saves the Day LLC) collects, uses, discloses, and protects information when you use the Rooted Family Chores mobile app, the Rooted Family parent web dashboard, and myrootedfamily.com (together, the "Service").
By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service. This Privacy Policy should be read together with our Terms of Service.
Contents
1. Who we are, and who this applies to
Rooted Family Chores is a family chores, rewards, and goals app used by households. Every household has one or more adult Account Holders (parents, legal guardians, or other adults invited by them) who create and manage the household, and may include one or more child profiles that the Account Holder sets up for their children.
Children do not sign up for the Service on their own. A child profile only exists because an adult Account Holder created it inside a household they control. Everything in this policy about a child's information should be read together with the Children's Privacy section below.
2. Information we collect
We follow one rule: we collect the smallest amount of information necessary to run the Service. We do not collect information "just in case it's useful later."
Information adults provide directly
- Account information: name, email address, and password (if you sign up with email), or basic profile information (name, email, profile photo) from Google or Apple if you sign in that way.
- Household information: household name, time zone, and the roles you assign to other adults you invite (Owner, Parent, Adult, or Viewer).
- Child profile information you create: a nickname (not a full legal name), an optional birth year, a preset avatar you choose from our built-in library (Rooted Family does not support uploading a child's photo), and an optional PIN used only for that child to sign in on a shared family device.
- Content you create: chores, chore descriptions, recurring schedules, rewards, point values, goals, and any notes or approval decisions you enter.
- Wishlist and product information: if you choose to link or import an item from a supported retailer (for example Amazon, Target, Walmart, or LEGO) for a reward or wishlist item, we store the product title, image, price, and link you provided or that was fetched from the retailer's publicly available page. We do not collect your retailer account credentials, and we never process retailer purchases on your behalf — see Wishlist & Purchases in our Terms of Service.
- Communications: if you contact us for support, we collect what you send us so we can respond.
Information a child may provide (within a household a parent controls)
- A PIN chosen for the child's device sign-in (stored only as an irreversible cryptographic hash — we cannot see or recover the actual PIN).
- Chore submissions and notes about completed chores.
- Wishlist requests a child types themselves (a title, a short note, and an optional "where I saw it" label) — children cannot browse external retailer sites, paste links, or upload photos of themselves within the app.
Information collected automatically
- Device and diagnostic information: crash reports and basic app-performance data (via Firebase Crashlytics) so we can find and fix bugs.
- Push notification tokens: a device identifier used solely to deliver notifications you've enabled (like "a chore is ready for approval").
- Usage information: general information about how the Service is used (such as which features are opened) to help us understand what's working and what isn't. This is used in aggregate to improve the Service — it is never used to build advertising profiles.
Information we do not collect
- We do not require or collect a child's full legal name, home address, phone number, or precise location.
- We do not collect payment card details for retailer purchases — those happen entirely off-platform, directly between you and the retailer.
- We do not allow children to upload their own photos as profile pictures.
3. Children's privacy
Rooted Family Chores is designed to be used by children under the supervision and control of a parent or legal guardian, and we take children's privacy seriously — including under the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar laws elsewhere.
How a child profile is created and consented to
A child never creates their own account, provides their own email address, or agrees to any terms themselves. A verified adult Account Holder — who has already created their own account and agreed to our Terms of Service — adds each child profile from inside the household they control. By creating a child's profile, the Account Holder is providing consent, on the child's behalf, to the collection described in this policy for that child.
Children sign in to a device using a nickname/avatar and, optionally, a PIN set by the parent — never an email address or password of their own.
What we will never do with a child's information
- We will never sell a child's personal information.
- We will never use a child's information to build an advertising profile, and we do not show behavioral or targeted ads to children.
- We will never expose a child's information publicly, and there is no public or open messaging feature that would let a child communicate with a stranger.
- We will never use a household's data — including a child's data — to train public AI models without explicit consent.
Parents are always in control
The Account Holder who created a household controls every aspect of a child's privacy within it, including:
- Household membership and who else can see the child's information.
- What the child profile contains, and editing or deleting it at any time.
- Whether AI-assisted features (like generated quest text) are used.
- Requesting full deletion of the child's data, or the entire household's data — see Your Choices and Rights below.
A child cannot change household-wide privacy or permission settings — only an Account Holder can.
If you are a parent and have questions
If you believe your child has provided personal information beyond what this policy describes, or you'd like to review, correct, or delete your child's information, contact us at support@myrootedfamily.com and we will respond promptly.
4. How we use information
We use the information described above only to:
- Operate the core features of the Service — households, chores, approvals, points, rewards, goals, and wishlists.
- Authenticate Account Holders and secure child sign-in on shared devices.
- Send transactional emails you or your household have enabled, such as adult invitations, weekly household summaries, and account-related notices. You can opt out of non-essential emails (like weekly summaries) at any time.
- Send push notifications you've enabled, such as chore-approval alerts.
- Diagnose crashes, fix bugs, and improve reliability and performance.
- Detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, abuse, or security issues.
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not use household or child information for targeted or behavioral advertising, and Rooted Family's business model is subscriptions — not advertising or data sales.
5. Who we share information with
We share information only with the service providers necessary to run the Service, and only to the extent needed for the purpose described. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share information with data brokers or advertisers.
- Google Firebase (authentication, database, backend functions, crash reporting, and push notification delivery) — our core cloud infrastructure provider.
- Resend — our transactional email provider, used to deliver invitations, weekly summaries, and account-related emails.
- Google Sign-In and Sign in with Apple — used only if you choose to sign in with a Google or Apple account.
- AI content providers (such as Google Gemini, with an internal template as a fallback) — used only to generate optional, kid-facing "adventure mode" quest text from a chore's title and category. No child personal information is sent to these providers as part of this process.
- Supported retailers (for example Amazon, Target, Walmart, or LEGO) — when an Account Holder chooses to import or link a wishlist item, publicly available product information is fetched from the retailer to display within the app. This does not give the retailer access to your household data.
- Cloudflare — used to host our website and web dashboard.
We may also disclose information if required to do so by law, to protect the rights, property, or safety of Rooted Family, our users, or others, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (in which case we will provide notice before information becomes subject to a different privacy policy).
6. AI-generated content
Rooted Family Chores includes an optional "adventure mode" that can generate playful, kid-facing quest descriptions for chores using AI. Only a chore's title and category are used to generate this text — never a child's name, profile, or personal information. Generated text can be edited or replaced by a parent at any time, and household data is never used to train public AI models without your explicit consent.
7. Data retention
We retain household and child information for as long as the household's account remains active, so the Service keeps working the way you expect. If an Account Holder deletes a child's profile or their entire household, we delete the associated data from our active systems, other than information we're required to retain for legal, security, or fraud-prevention purposes (such as records needed to enforce our Terms of Service). Residual copies may briefly persist in encrypted backups before being permanently purged.
8. Security
We protect information using industry-standard safeguards, including:
- Encryption in transit and at rest.
- Least-privilege access controls, so only systems and people who need information can access it.
- Strict server-side isolation between households — one family's data is never readable by another family.
- Child PINs are stored only as irreversible cryptographic hashes; we never store or display a child's actual PIN.
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work hard to protect your family's information and will notify affected users as required by law in the event of a data breach.
9. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain uses of it. Regardless of location, we offer every family the following:
- Access and correction: Account Holders can view and edit their own information and any child profile in their household directly within the app.
- Deletion: Account Holders can delete a child's profile and their own adult account directly in the app. For help deleting an entire household, removing an adult member, or requesting deletion if you cannot access the app, email us at support@myrootedfamily.com — see our account deletion page for details.
- Email preferences: non-essential emails, like weekly household summaries, include an opt-out link, and preferences can also be managed in Household Settings.
- Portability: you may request an export of your household's data by contacting us.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@myrootedfamily.com. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
10. International users
Rooted Family is based in the United States, and the infrastructure we use to provide the Service is primarily located in the United States. If you use the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your country.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the app, by email, or by updating the effective date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
